Dunfermline nominated A-Team for 2010/2011 is Ian Robertson, Garry Forbes, John McBride, Gavin Saxton and Michael Roy.
I was unavailable for this match and Fred ably stepped in to score a full point.
Match report courtesy of the captain Ian.
The match was closer than result suggests. Fred was convincing winner but Ronnie provided considerable assistance. Michael was worse till George threw a piece. Gavin’s dodgy opening gambit only succeeded courtesy of a horror move from David. Garry missed a couple of open goals before the position turned into a blocked midfield stalemate. I was much better out the opening but gave Ian one opportunity to play a counter tactic which may have got him an unusual draw by perpetual but he opted out of it for what seemed were reasonable reasons but an exchange sac by me next move and his game was gone.

Dunfermline player on winning side as Guernsey beat Jersey
Dunfermline 'A' team player, Garry Forbes recently enjoyed representing Guernsey in their recent Chess Inter-Insular match in Jersey. The match is contested over 16 boards and the Guernsey team won 9.5-6.5 (with full board scores below). Garry had the black pieces and his match ended in very quick fashion when his opponent forced an early draw by perpetual.
Guernsey also retained the reserve shield and Fred Hamperl (also the Guernsey team captain) won the coveted title of Channel Island Champion outright for the 2nd time by defeating the Jersey Champion Belzo on board 1. The Guernsey champion plays Jersey champion on board 1 for this title. http://www.guernseychessclub.org.gg for further info under Press Reports.
It was a fantastically enjoyable weekend as the match was played in a hotel in the Jersey countryside. Several Guernsey players enjoyed a game of tennis on the Friday afternoon in the sunshine and there is always a meal and drinks after the match. The cameraderie between both teams is excellent and this has been further strengthened by the islands entering a team in the 4NCL.
Although Guernsey were fielding a very strong side due to several strong Jersey players being unable to play, Guernsey players still had to be at their best to win on Jersey soil for the first time since 1994, with several Guernsey players punching well above their weight (especially Colin Goman on board 9, who was originally first reserve and stepped in heroically at the last minute).
The match alternates every year between the islands (even years in Jersey, odd years in Guernsey) and Guernsey's 9.5-6.5 victory was the biggest over Jersey since 1997. The victory takes the match totals since the first Inter-Insular in 1931 to Jersey 40, Guernsey 27, Draw 6. This was Garry's 6th match for Guernsey against Jersey and this was his 2nd team victory (the first one being the 9-7 victory at home in 2005).
Guernsey will be hoping to get their good home record in recent years back on track in 2011. After defeating Jersey in two tight matches in 2005 and 2007, they unfortunately lost heavily in 2009. This is the biggest chess fixture of the season for both islands and Garry is already looking forward to the chess Inter-Insular in 2011.

Dunfermline V Grangemouth Cup Final Match 05/05/2010
Dunfermline are looking to win 4 out 5 possible competitions this season. This match represented the 3rd of these ambitions. With the 4th being contested next week with the B team going for the 2nd division title against Grangemouth B.
This match took place at Dunfermline's home venue, the Del Farquarson Centre. On paper this final looked like the best and most exciting match up of the season. There is little doubt that these two teams are the strongest in the league over seven boards. Both teams were really up for this match and none of the games were dull. Even the draw on board one was a ding dong battle, ending with black forcing a draw to secure the match. Although it turns out black could have won it instead, something pointed out by Peter Wynn in the pub. But why risk the match trying to win a queen and pawn endgame? Forcing the draw was the right thing to do for Ian Robertson.
All the other games were decisive with three good wins each. Each of the winners played really well and the final result of 3.5-3.5 was a very fair result. However, Dunfermline's wins on boards two and six, as compared to Grangemouth wins on boards three and seven, was the decisive factor in the board count for Dunfermline. In comparison Grangemouth only bettered Dunfermline with a win on board four to Dunfermline's win on board five. A little tough on Grangemouth, but the tie-break is the only way to decide a cup final.
It was a real privilege to take part in such a hard fought, exciting and well played match.

Cumbernauld V Dunfermline A, Dunfermline's final league match of the 2009/2010 season.
This match was played Monday the 19th April at the Muirfield Community Education Centre, Brown Road, Seafar, Cumbernauld.
After a round tour of Cumbernauld's roadworks, the Dunfermline team arrived to find that Cumbernauld had split their strength over two teams. Cumbernauld were trying to win their Lanarkshire league match and so had 3 of their A team players diverted to that team. The team left to face Dunfermline contained 3 regular Central League players and were out graded on every board. Unfortunately, one of those players failed to turn up and Cumbernauld were very soon 1-0 down.
Half way into the match it looked like a 5-0 victory was on the cards, however, good play and mistakes on both sides resulted in a 3.5-1.5 victory to Dunfermline. Cumbernauld did manage to draw their other match 2-2.

Grangemouth Lions V Dunfermline Minnows Allegro League (Score-5.5-10.5)
The Allegro league title decider was played on Wednesday the 14th of April at Grangemouth. This was the Minnows final Allegro match for this season and only a win would do for them. As the Lions had a one point advantage in this league and a draw, or better would see them win the title.
As it was, the Lions 4th team member failed to turn up, giving them an insurmountable handicap. However, if he had turned up, he would have had to have scored 2.5/4, or more to have won the league for the Lions. A tall order for someone graded 1528 playing against a very strong Minnows team.
As opposed to last year in the same fixture, when rooks were given away by the Minnows left, right and centre, the Minnows only gave away a free queen in the 1st match. Starting each match 1-0 down the Lions found the match had gone against them by the end of match 3. The only bright spot for the Lions being Ian Mason ending Ian Robertson's unbeaten run in the final allegro league game of the season, his 1st loss in some 28 games.
Jim Watson (1526) (1 point) beat George Webb (1482), lost to Ian Robertson (2170), John McBride (1706) & Jim Webster (1589)
Ian Mason (1850) (3 points) beat George & Ian, drew with John and Jim
Doug Will (1839) (1.5 pts) beat Jim, draw with George, lost to Ian and John
Well done to the Dunfermline Minnows, who are now the 1st div league and allegro champions for 2009/2010. Just the knock-out cup to go and they will have the treble.

Central League KO 2009/2010
Cumbernauld were unable to field a team against Dunfermline A on the 7th of April. They therefore conceded the match, as their fixture congestion is ongoing. Dunfermline go straight through to the final, which is to be played at Dunfermline on Wednesday the 5th of May.
They are to be joined by Grangemouth, who overcame an out-graded but stubborn Stirling side 4.5 - 2.5. The final is going to be a tough match for both the sides. Certainly a fitting finale for the 2009/2010 season.

SNCL Final round 7
The final round of the SNCL took place today and what a hard fought round it was for the Central League teams involved, Kingdom Kings, Kingdom Knights, Forth Valley and Cumbernauld. The Kingdom's currently consist of players from the Glenrothes and Dunfermline chess clubs. While Forth Valley are part Stirling and part Grangemouth. Cumbernauld is just Cumbernauld with the addition of Alan Grant.
Kingdom Knights whose board one Gavin had been poached by the Kingdom Kings, fielded a slightly weaker team to face their Central League rivals Forth Valley. A very competitive match ensued and the final result only became clear after I blundered with time running out on move 38. Rybka had it fairly even until then. The rest of the games had also been well contested, with a good win for Glenrothes Stuart Blyth on board four.
We were at first mystified by the result on board two, with Garry's time running out he was offered a draw, guaranteeing them at least a drawn match with board one still to finish. Then the news came in why, dead certs for promotion Edinburgh Uni had turned up a player short and lost 3-2. As a result Forth Valley only needed to draw the match with the Kingdom Knights to be promoted to div 2. Not that it mattered as they won the match against us 3.5-1.5. I bet Forth Valley were not expecting Edinburgh Uni to lose, it was a big shock. Well done to Forth Valley on promotion!

Cumbernauld have been the most successful of the Central League teams. By drawing their last match with CBOS 2.5-2.5, they win div 2 and are promoted to div 1. There is not much between div 2-4, but div 1 is a big step up. Well done to them, lets hope they can hold their own next year.

2009-2010 1st Division Title
To start off this blog, there is good news for the Dunfermline club 1st team, who have retained their 1st division title with one match to spare.
As is usually the case, the road to the title has not been an easy one, with a number of close matches along the way. The title deciding match played away at Grangemouth on the 24th of March 2010 was no different and a draw, or even the scores reversed looked likely for the 1st half of the match.
First game to finish was on board 2. This ended a draw, even though everybody had written this game off, as Gavin was 3 pawns down with a lost position very early in the game. Board 3 was not looking much better either, after making up the opening John M had a cramped but stubbornly defended position. This changed after he broke chess rules and moved a knight to the side of the board. Black then had a good advantage, but humans are not computers and the position was still stubbornly defended, leading to a draw offer. Ian R on board 1 was collecting small advantages throughout his game and was winning easily by the time Ian M's flag fell.
With the score at 2-1 to Dunfermline, the match was very much in the balance. Garry on board 5 was a piece and a passed pawn down and Michael on board 3 had played a very good game to be winning easily, but was very short of time in a complicated position. Michael managed to pick his way through the difficulties set for him by John S and sealed the match for Dunfermline with checkmate. Then the shock of the night, with time running out Garry managed to bamboozle his opponent into offering him a draw, even though William had a completely won position. Dunfermline therefore won the match by the score 1.5 - 3.5.

Welcome to this blog about chess in the Central League
Three of the Central League clubs already have excellent websites Cumbernauld, Dunfermline and Stirling. These websites already provide plenty of information about the clubs and their matches in the league.
However, I felt that what is needed is somewhere for this information and pictures can be pulled together on one site. Which could then be viewed in a historical timeline. Normal websites and forums would struggle to properly and clearly display that amount of data. Therefore, a blog is the obvious answer and should prove an excellent historical tool for all the clubs in the Central League. Also, it might also be useful in advertising the clubs to potential new members.
To make this blog useful, I would be grateful for any of the following information that can be provided, match scores, players, results, reports and pictures. Even if it is about hammering Dunfermline!
Thanks
