Dunfermline's last match for 2010-2011

If we went by grade this would have been a massacre but it rarely turns out that way.
Ian is not going to be happy again as we both miss assessed a crucial point near the end when I won the exchange but fritz says Ian should have let me take the whole rook when he could have had a plus 6 advantage!
As for the match - once Michael won the draws in the other games followed quickly - good all round  teamwork by Dunfermline!!!

Dunfermline 3-2 Cumbernauld
1. W [2137] Ian Robertson 0.5-0.5 Ian Marks [1887]
2. W [1705] Michael Roy 1.0-0.0 David Johnstone [1611]
3. B [1703] Frank Ossowski 0.5-0.5 George Thomson [1548]
4. B [1654] Jim Webster 0.5-0.5 Ronnie Wallace [1431]
5. B [1571] Calum Smith 0.5-0.5 John Pearston [1197]

For Cumbernauld they lost the game that had the smallest grading difference! A good performance from Cumbernauld.

This result confirms Dunfermline 2nd place in division one.

Jersey Weekender

A report by our on site reporter Garry, who played in the 1st Jersey Congress, played from the 18th to the 20th of March 2011.

Garry timed his move to Jersey perfectly to coincide with the 1st Jersey annual weekend congress on 18th-20th March (there used to be an annual tournament every year in Jersey, however this was withdrawn in recent years due to lack of sponsorship). The tournament was 'the one that got away' for Garry as he finished with 2/6. in a strong field where 2 of the 1900 players scored 1 point between them and a couple of strong English juniors participated, however Garry felt he really threw 1.5 points away over 2 of his matches. This is definitely a tournament Garry would recommend as although the venue may change, the island is a beautiful place to visit with much to see. The tournament is not FIDE rated (it was going to be originally but this was changed at the last minute) although may be iFIDE rated n future (FIDE ratings if known in brackets below). Some lovely pics of the views outside the venue attached.

Garry lost in the 1st round to Marcin Mazurkiewicz(2005), who is currently looking likely to finish 2nd in a strong Jersey 1st Division. In the 2nd round he managed to draw with Black against Tito Khan(2152), who Garry had lost to twice previously with Black in Inter-Insular matches against Jersey playing for Guernsey. Tito missed a win in time trouble, however Garry was slightly better in the final position, though winning chances were minimal with a Queen, a bishop and 3 pawns each so Tito's offer of a draw was accepted. After being exhausted from his exertions against Tito on the Saturday morning, Garry lost a technically drawn R+P position against Marc Shaw(2019) with White and then drew with Chris Hill (1785) with Black in the Sat evening match, where not once pawn or piece was exchanged!

Sunday morning Garry was determined to win at least one of his two games and in trying to win both, lost one. Garry beat Richard Dulley (1920) in the morning with White, where although he blundered the exchange, he already had a massive kingside attack, which ended up with mate. Garry lost to Graham Boxall (1993) with Black in the last round on time when completely winning on the board. Garry will be aiming to score more points in the 2nd Jersey Congress in 2012 and also hoping not to have 4 Blacks and 2 Whites next time around!

A few pics taken by Garry, he should invest in a new DSLR for better indoor pics. Sorry about the dark pic.

Great venue, good location. Chess and sea views, wow.
 Plenty of space.
 Fancy a walk.
 Fancy a dip.
Sea, sunsets and chess, what more do you want?
Great location for families, pity they don't do this in the summer months.

KO Cup

06/04/2011

Dunfermline went down to 3-4 to Grangemouth despite our novelty game plan of gaining clock time by not leaving them any parking spaces!!
Alas when they arrived the Grangemouth team demonstrated that a few minutes made little difference.

1 I Robertson 0-1 A Bell
2 J McBride draw I Mason
3 G Saxton 0-1 D Will
4 M Roy 1-0 G Allison
5 F Ossowski 0-1 M Monaghan
6 J Webster draw J Smith
7 S Brisbane 1-0 W Gray

We should also blame our board two Gary for moving to Jersey, but on the bright side we don't have to play the semi next Wednesday. Grangemouth instead now move on to play Stirling in the semi finals next Wednesday.

Final round of the SNCL 27/03/2011

The final round of the SNCL was played at the Glen Pavilion, Dunfermline on the 27/03/2011. Some pics and a short vid from the event can be seen below.

The Kingdom Knights were already promoted from div three and their last round was of no importance for promotion and demotions. As a result key Knights players decided to have a rest. Despite Dundee City B defaulting board five, they still won 3-2. Peter Horne did really well on board three to score a draw against a much stronger opponent. On board two I got hammered by a very strong player, while Gary did well to draw on board one. Our board four battled away to no avail.

A slightly weaker Kingdom Kings achieved a third place finish in div one after losing to the second team Dundee City A 4-1.

Cumbernauld just managed to hold onto their first div status by losing 3.5 to 1.5 to East Kilbride. If East Kilbride had scored one more game point they would have swapped relegation places with Cumbernauld. A relief for them I am sure.

In div two Forth Valley completed a clean sweep of 7/7 by beating Hamilton B and are joining Kingdom Kings and Cumbernauld in div one next year.

The team lightning tournament that was cancelled due to snow was rescheduled for the afternoon after round seven. A tough tournament for Dunfermline. We did slightly too well in qualifying and ended up in the top section. We all had to face good player after good player and it was relentless. On the bright side I did get a win with black against David Patrick, a 2170 player. Five minutes seems to go so quickly.

Glenrothes chess congress 11th-13th of March 2011

Five Dunfermline players played in this excellent Glenrothes tournament. Not much to report apart for an U1300 grading prize for a Terry Doherty. In the minor U1450, Peter Horne scored 3/5, Glynis Grant scored 2/5 and Terry Doherty scored 3.5/5. In the open, Ian Robertson scored 3/5 and I scored 2/5.

It is unusual for someone to win with 5/5 in such a strong open, but Alan Tate managed just that. He beat an IM and a near IM strength player in rounds four and five to average 2551 for the weekend. Some performance!

For a change, it was nice for me to have a decent win against someone close to my playing strength. The game can be viewed below.

SNCL rounds five and six

27/02/2011
Four Central League teams were in action today at the Scottish National League.

In the first division the Kingdom Kings were missing a number of key players. The replacements did their best, but in the end were seriously out-gunned and lost both matches. Hamilton A, would probably have won beat them anyway, but losing to Edinburgh West will cost them a second place finish in division one.

Also in div one, Cumbernauld drew one match and lost the other. That result should probably be enough to keep them in division one, unless they lose heavily in the last round.

In division two Forth Valley are now top with another two wins today. That is six wins from six and they are to be promoted for the second year in a row and are now heading to division one. Three out of the eight teams in division one next season will be Central League teams, amazing. We just need the Kingdom Knights to join them and we will rule half of div one.

The Kingdom Knights had to win their two matches today to keep up their second place spot in Div three. This they did and special mention must go to Gary Forbes, who was up against it in positions and opponents grades, in both games today. He managed to draw them and by doing so in the morning saved us from drawing with a re-enforced Corstorphine.

We were expecting to have to fight for the second promotion spot against Dundee City B during the final round next month. However, they had a narrow loss to Oban in the morning and then beat our other rivals Lanark in the afternoon. In turn Oban were hammered by the rampant Edinburgh University team in the afternnoon. As a result none of them can now catch us and we only have to turn up next month to get promotion to div two. :) Edinburgh Uni will be promoted with their top spot and I can see them going straight to div one next year.
